This is a DVD of four collaborative performances between Mustard-In-Law and acclaimed comic artist Victor Cayro, who just so happens to have a thing about pouring mustard on himself! It was an ambitious project, editing this disc. The laughter squeezed from those who see it leaves them paralyzed in spastic chortles. Eventually, I overcame the potency and was able to weave audience members’ footage onto our own to achieve more perspectives on each glorious drizzle. Bonus menu includes a slideshow of art from Victor’s HAVE SEX exhibit, which is where one of these performances occurred. Cover art and handwriting by the living mustard himself, Victor Cayro. Released by Dubuque label Personal Archives.
Here’s a great review from someone who saw one of these mustard shows… https://www.splicetoday.com/music/ultra-sonic-love-poems
Baleful Fiend Redeye asked me to do a live video projection during their set…
Performance on the Leisure Screen Live show.
Recorded at the University of Iowa TV Studios in 2017, mixed 2019.
Muuma Wuuno was Mustard-In-Law with Ben Uhl making live improvised analog video magic, which you can see in the background.
Our xmust tape.
We utilized a wide array of samples from many classic holiday tunes and films.
Victor Cayro, acclaimed comic book artist, had an exhibit of his works, entitled “HAVE SEX,” in the gallery above Monk’s in Dubuque, Iowa. For the closing reception he invited a few musician friends to play as entertainment. He also asked Mustard-In-Law to perform, during which time he reprised his award-winning role as the living embodiment of Mustard….
Iowa City’s Public Access Television Station, PATV, asked me to exhibit some work for their monthly event, PATV Underground. My CAT SHOW went up on the first day of the Iowa ArtsFest, and displayed until the end of June.
At the gig, Mustard-In-Law performed in the TV studio, in front of an audience, and live streaming on PATV’s YouTube channel. We played with a green screen behind us, and brought an appropriate video to key in….
We played a bunch of shows in a few weeks. At Monk’s Cafe in Dubuque, famed comic book artist Victor Cayro joined us on stage. Please strap yourself in, it’s wild.
Muuma Wuuno made a video for the Iowa City band Crystal City.
Muuma Wuuno made two videos for English band Year Of Birds.
At 6pm on August 16, 2016, we hit record on the video camera and proceeded to film a battery of prepared visual stations without stopping the recording until the 30 minute mark. At 9pm, we arrived at the Governor’s Mansion and set up our sound equipment facing a blank wall. Using the projector on the camera, we splashed the recording from earlier onto the wall. All of the sound was improvised live while watching the film. The audience gathered behind us, able to see both the projection and what we were doing with our hands.
Played at BIC & made a tape.
Bob Bucko asked me to provide visual accompaniment to his audio performance at Gabe’s, opening for F∆UST (yes, that says F∆UST!) during Mission Creek (officially it was the first show in the week’s events), in Iowa City.
This is the aftermath of FAUST’s set. On the ground next to the cement mixer, you can see the jackhammer that shook the ground beneath us as the acid took hold. I witnessed a billion boiling births, and the secret sleep cycle of every plant and insect was revealed to me, foisted (Fausted?!) upon my weary mind in a ritual of spiritual elopement.
Flyer by Yobleart. At the event, I provided colored pencils and copies of the flyer for attendees to color for a souvenir.
FilmScene asked me to provide projections during DJ Recue’s dance party after a Dandy Warhols performance. DJ Rescue is Zia McCabe, who plays bass, keyboards, and percussion in Dandy Warhols. Here are some shots from the event, and screen captures of my visuals.
The Dubuque Area Arts Collective invited me to do “something interactive” at the reception for their annual 60-artist exhibition, SALON. What I came up with was “video portraits” – instant manipulations of a live camera feed showing reception attendees. Here are some screenshots..
Video projected during live set by Dead Man’s Lifestyle, at Rozz-tox, Rock Island, IL.
